He woke every day at 7:30 and stepped out for some exercises, some of which he had performed daily since 1919. Then he fixed toast, coffee cake and tea and ate as he read a book.
Afterward he smoked his pipe, took a short walk and settled down at 9:00 to write.
His desk had a dictionary, a knife for the pipes and a tupewriter, which he has used since 1934.
First draft is done in long hand, writing up to 400 pages of notes to outline the plot. and then polishes as typing, producing a book about every 3 months in his heydey, though this slowed to every 6 months later on his life.
